Living out of an RV has its challenges. Some of the things we take for granted become a luxury such as water, electricity, heat, air conditioning, toast, pizza... the list goes on. I've put together a gear list that has been invaluable to us as we live out of our Travco.
Although our Travco has the original propane furnace and stove/oven still installed, we've opted for more simple (safer) solutions to these necessities. For cooking and heating food in a pot or pan we use JETBOIL Jetpower fuel mix with a simple backpacking stove. Just recently we acquired a good toaster oven that has made life grand! We can make toast, pizza, roasted potatoes... so many great things! We also have a BioLite wood burning campstove as a backup in the event we're out of fuel or without electricity (powers a cell phone while burning wood).
Currently, we're plugged into shore power but this is not always the case. More often than not we need to run a generator to power our lights, computer, toaster oven and occasionally the air conditioner. The original Onan Generator in our Travco wasn't working so we acquired a Honda 2000i. Quiet and efficient... enough said! Solar panels are on our wish list.
Well, the reality is that we really don't need to shower on a daily basis. The key word there is "need"... or maybe I'm making excuses. Anyway, we were looking for some kind of shower unit that didn't require using water from our holding tanks. We found it with the HELIO. It takes up to 3 gallons of water and with a few pumps to pressurize it, it works great! The neat thing is that leaving it in the sun for a couple hours heats the water enough for really hot showers. It can be used to hose off our bicycles as well. I really like the HELIO and it becomes the better option when we're faced with a sponge and bucket of water.
We need the ability to upload photos to our site and communicate with family and clients. More often than not we're in areas that have poor cell phone signals. We found a solution with a Wilson Electronics signal booster. It can't give us lightning fast internet, but it will boost the signal enough for us to surf (slowly) or send/retrieve email and make calls.
There are a few things that have been essential to us. Right now, at this very moment I am really appreciating the Electronic Mosquito Swatter! I purchased it when we were in Florida, but we rarely used it there. Here on the North Shore of Minnesota, the mosquitoes are literally waiting in ambush as we leave the Travco! Inside... I've killed over a dozen just today. I'm not sure how they're getting into our Travco, they are truly blood thirsty aggressive. This little electronic swatter makes killing the mosquitoes almost fun.
There are other gadgets and gear that make our lives comfortable, but the ones I've mentioned make our life in a Travco so much better!
