In our search for interesting places to photograph in Florida, we visited a town called Gibsonton.
Here's what Wikipedia has to say:
Gibsonton was famous as a sideshow wintering town, where various people in the carnival business would spend the off season placing it near the winter home for Ringling Brothers Circus at Tampa, Sarasota and Venice in various times . It was home to Percilla the Monkey girl, the Anatomical Wonder, and the Lobster Boy. Siamese twin sisters ran a fruit stand here. At one time, it was the only post office with a counter for dwarves.
We expected to see all kinds of vintage carnival stuff, so we set out on our bikes to explore. As we made our way deeper into the neighborhoods, we rode by a lot of old travel trailers and run down mobile homes. There was a very odd feel to the whole place, not friendly at all yet not too dangerous if you mind your business.
Then something surreal happened... I spotted TWO Travcos parked side by side in someone's back yard!! They were out of our reach and too far away to take a decent photo. Man, was that exciting and sad at the same time! I so desperately wanted to walk across the property to get a better look, but stray dogs, warning signs and an old man telling us to watch out for "crazies" woke me from my dream. We gotta go back...
