We have started our journey back to Minnesota. We're currently in Arkansas and hope to be in Minneapolis by the end of this week.
Our Travco has been struggling the past few months and it has been difficult pinpointing the cause(s). It is starting to look like a camshaft + valve issue. Its a tired old engine and our Travco may have seen its last palm tree! We're considering replacing our 318 with another engine... Which will cost us big $$$! Once we get back to MN we'll start looking into it, but for now we just need to focus on keeping it running.
I can't convey the stress I've experienced while trying to get our Travco out of Florida. The hills of the panhandle were just brutal! On a few of the climbs we were literally moving at 15 mph! The lack of power is just horrible. I swapped the fuel fowled plugs out several times and even used some "non fouler" caps. That resulted in a rubber boot melting and frying a plug! (I think it was a bad plug, but at this point I really don't have a clue).
Our gas mileage is dismal. I am estimating we get around 4.5 miles a gallon with ethanol gas and 6 miles per gallon with non-ethanol. I also discovered that the non-ethanol gas gives us more power on the hills and we can actually cruise at 50mph on flat land! This is huge because we were topping out at 45mph prior to using ethanol free gasoline. Who woulda known?
I am determined to get this thing back alive. We need to be in northern Minnesota by June 1st and I won't leave her behind (I am referring to the Travco, not Edwige)!
