The nice side of traveling light is to be able to move around a lot. We regularly visit Saguaro National Park from our base camp.
The road to the park has many dips which feels like being on a roller coaster ride and the scenery is gorgeous, I love the Sonoran desert! I thought it would be barren and silent instead it's filled with plants and trees and very much alive!
The Saguaro cactus is my favorite. The tall ones with arms are between 150 and 200 years old! Many of the saguaros we're looking at today were around when Wyatt Earp was fighting the cowboys. Neat!
On hikes, Kurt and I listen to coyotes howling. We occasionally hear snorting and learned that javelinas lived in the desert. At one of the trail heads there was a warning posted about Africanized bees aka Killer bees. We've been aware of them ever since we entered the southern states and finally met a few.
The ranger taught us that, as a warning, the bees will bump into us before attacking. So we stay on alert the whole time while photographing for our project. It's a little unsettling to deal with them, knowing how aggressive and easily provoked they can be...
