Egads! What more could happen to us in a 24 hour period!? It all started with a flat tire. We limped off the road near Mt Pleasant, Iowa and gave Good Sam a call... I was given an initial quote of $500+ for a rim & tire replacement. As well, we would have to wait until the next morning for the tire tech to arrive and fix our flat. "Serenity Now"
The next morning the tire tech arrives and finds out that the new rim won't fit our rig. He was under the impression that our Travco was a travel trailer not a motorhome (not his or our fault). The tech radios in the problem and locates a replacement tube for our tire and fixes it for $70. We pull out of Mt Pleasant feeling tired but relieved. About 70 miles later, during rush hour near Cedar Rapids Iowa, the same tire goes flat again! "SERENITY NOW"
We call it in and sit on the shoulder of the hectic freeway for 3 hours until a tire tech can get out to us. In the meantime, I decide to swap out a starter relay that I thought might be the reason for some other trouble we've been having. I get it into place just as the tire guy arrives. Oh, and whatever this thing is (see pic), I accidentally break it while to trying to install the relay.
This time around we have a new tube and a new tire. The tech gets the tire mounted, installed and wraps up the paperwork... this one ends up costing us $340. The tire guy leaves and I start the Travco to warm it up. About 20 seconds into the engine idling the starter begins engaging! (what and awful sound that makes while the engine is running) I turn the key to the "off" position which stops the engine, but the starter is still engaging! I frantically disconnect the new starter relay I had installed thinking that was the culprit, but that does nothing! Next, I rip the couch off its hinges (not intentionally) trying to get access to the battery bay but I've dropped my flashlight and then couldn't find a ratchet or wrench! Finally I get the positive wire off the battery but not until the starter had been whining for a good 3 or 4 minutes! Edwige watched me in disbelief. She didn't approve of my methods for trying to get at the battery.
So... another call to Good Sam to arrange a tow into town. By this time, its about 11:30 pm. I am told by the Good Sam operator that the tow truck will arrive in 4 hours... Apparently, its a holiday weekend and they have only one driver on call. "SERENITY NOW!!"
We are towed into Hiawatha near Cedar Rapids around 2 a.m. We are weary and fall asleep very quickly. More to come...
