John, Jack, Justin and Bri
Last year we ran into a couple photography legends while out shooting in the field. This year we ran into them again but this time it was less of a coincidence. I knew John Shaw, Jack Dykinga and Justin Black would be in Death Valley giving their workshop over a 2-week period in January, so we were on the lookout!
One January day while out shooting for the park, we noticed John Shaw's vehicle parked on the side of the road. How did I know it was John Shaw's vehicle? Well, I kinda remembered from last year... I also looked for a friendly looking guy with white hair and beard.
Edwige, John and I spent at least a couple hours chatting on the roadside and I'm not even sure if we discussed photography or not. Most of our conversation revolved around pop-up campers, van living and the like. John is a great guy and we really enjoyed our time getting to know him!
A couple days later we met up with John, Jack Dykinga and Justin Black while they were in the field giving their workshop. They graciously allowed us to photograph them for the park. Just watching and hanging around with these guys is an education! If you want to learn photography, spend a fraction of the money that you would on college and attend a couple of their workshops. You'll learn more over four weeks in the field with these guys than you would with a year of college courses.
Our niece Brianna came to visit us in Death Valley during the second week of January. She had recently graduated with photography as her major so I was happy to take a shot of her with these photography legends. All three of these guys are genuinely funny, smart and tops in their field. If they were actors it would have been like meeting De Niro, Hanks and Hoffman. OK, so maybe I am impressed by these guys but I am not inaccurate in my assessment of them. You can learn more about them here: visionarywild
